ASQ Helps Fledgling African Foundation

Big on ideas.  Long on hope.  Short on resources.  That in a nutshell sums up the strategic position and the challenge facing The Foundation for African Non-Governmental Organizations Management in Zambia, a recent recipient of an Associations Make a Better World Award.

Learning about the foundation’s plight and its promise, ASQ stepped up and delivered a library of 60 ASQ Quality Press books on quality and performance excellence to help the organization fulfill its mission to “lead the social sector organizations towards excellence in performance.”

Paul Jones Mubanga, founder and CEO of the foundation, met recently with Paul Borawski, ASQ executive director and chief strategic officer, and ecstatically expressed his thanks for the gift.  “These publications will be put to good intended use in enriching our library, which will be open to all our members,” he said.

The idea to support the work of the Zambian foundation occurred to Michelle Mason, ASQ managing director, as a result of a meeting she had with her friend Frances Hesselbein, chairman of the Leader to Leader Institute.  Mason was in New York to explore opportunities for ASQ to work with Leader to Leader on initiatives that would align with ASQ’s work in the non-profit marketplace.

“When Frances told me about her work with this foundation in Africa, it seemed like a great opportunity for ASQ to walk the social responsibility talk,” Mason stated.

As a result of this interaction, Paul Borawski has been invited by the Leader to Leader Institute to write a journal article and to author a chapter in an upcoming book.

The Leader to Leader Institute was established in 1990 as the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management.  Its goal is to lead social-sector organizations toward excellence in performance.  It works to build vibrant social-sector organizations by providing them with resources, ideas, and partnerships that will enable them and their future leaders to address their emerging opportunities and challenges.
