This simple website, homepage of the American Measuring Tool and Manufacturing Association (AMTMA), features information on how to join, membership benefits and a history of the association. It also has two useful features for members and nonmembers: a newsletter archive and a directory of member organizations. Visitors can view PDF versions of two years’ of AMTMA quarterly newsletters; each includes complete articles for tool manufacturers, a company profile and short news items. The member directory includes contact information and homepage links for dozens of organizations.

The Best Manufacturing Practices program is a collaboration between the Office of Naval Research, the Department of Commerce and the University of Maryland. Its site provides access to best-practice reports conducted by teams of government and industry experts. These include results of best-practice surveys and information on electronic tools and Web technologies several organizations have found useful.

Click on an industry (such as automotive, chemicals or electronics) or a topic (such as customer relations or design), and you’ll find event listings, news, case studies and discussion forums.

This site for manufacturing automation and process control engineers includes discussion boards, a real-time Q&A, automation tutorials and an archive of programming examples. It explains an effort to move the industry toward open control.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation created this site to inspire teens and preteens to pursue careers in engineering and manufacturing. It shows how engineers design and produce things such as snacks, clothing, cars, cosmetics and cell phones. It also features video clips of teens and preteens creating radio controlled airplanes and building computers at SME’s Science, Technology and Engineering Preview summer programs.

The Plant Maintenance Resource Center features hundreds of free articles on plant maintenance and free registration for its online newsletter, M-News. Article topics range from budgeting and terminology to change management, failure analysis and total productive maintenance. The site also has job postings, a discussion forum and free software listings. A unique feature is a five-minute benchmarking page, which allows users to benchmark their maintenance functions against those of other organizations.

The Society for Manufacturing Engineers’ (SME) website features an online library of books and articles, industry news, job postings, the SME bookstore and information on SME tradeshows and publications, all available to nonmembers. A newer feature is SME’s discussion forums, which range in topic from lean tool and die making to food packaging.
